Incredible Measurements

The metric system or SI (system international) provides a universal standard if measurement. It is a decimal system scaled on the powers of 10. Pick up a metric ruler and look carefully at the scale. You will see many little lines and every so often a much longer line marked with a number. The longer lines are centimeters (cm) and the shorter lines are one tenth of a centimeter (0.1) or a millimeter (mm).

1.      Using your metric ruler, draw a line that is 7 cm long. Put a small mark on the line for each cm length.

2.      Draw a line that is 7 mm long.

3.      What do you notice about the relationship between the lengths of these lines?

4.      What part of a cm is one mm?

To measure lengths that do not fall exactly on a centimeter mark, either count all of the small lines to record the measurement in mm or use cm and count the small lines as tenths of a cm.

5.      Measure the length of the following line.

____________________________

Length = ____________________mm   and length = ____________________cm

6.      Measure the length of the following line.

_________________________________________________

Length = ____________________mm   and length = ____________________cm

To measure volume in a graduated cylinder works much the same way as a metric ruler. The longer lines are milliliters (mL) and the shorter lines are one tenth of a milliliter (0.1). If the volume does not fall exactly on a milliliter (mL) mark, you should count the small lines as tenths of a mL.
